Description:Two Children's Nutrition Education paper back books titled "We Like to Eat" and "Nos Gusta Comer" were written, printed and pilot-tested with the objective of disseminating a nutrition education message to culturally and linguistically diverse children and families who participate or are eligible to participate in the Supplemental Nutrition Assistance Program. With funds from a 2007 MSUE Multicultural Action mini grant, the concept books were developed based on the USDA's "Mypyramid" for kids. The books feature diverse Mypyramid characters who explain, to young readers (kindergarten to third graders) and preschoolers and their parents, the five food groups using a fun approach. The books include simple, low cost, children-tested recipes from each food group that readers can try at home. Evaluation data on these cross-cultural nutrition education publications was collected with assistance from the following community partners in Michigan: Department of Human Services in Oceana county, Allen Neighborhood Center and Cristo Rey Community Center in Ingham county and Migrant Health Promotion in Washtenaw County. Four separate taste-tests were conducted in collaboration with two kindergarten classes at Pinecrest Elementary School in East Lansing and Telamon Corporation at Migrant Head Start centers in Bear Lake and Sutton's Bay. The recipes were adjusted in response to children’s taste test results and the books were edited using evaluation feedback. These cross-cultural children’s books can be used across the United States and internationally to promote nutrition education among Spanish and English speaking audiences.
